Cataract treatment in the eye is generally a simple procedure, but it must be approached with caution to avoid complications. The only effective treatment is surgery. Let’s explore the details below.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts (clouding of the natural eye lens) occur when the lens loses its transparency, causing vision problems. The natural lens is normally clear, but once cataracts develop, it turns cloudy and the pupil may appear grayish.

Causes of Cataracts

Common causes of cataract formation include:

  • Eye trauma.
  • Genetic factors.
  • Aging, especially after age 70.
  • Diabetes.
  • Previous eye inflammation.
  • Heavy alcohol consumption.
  • Long-term use of medications such as corticosteroids.
  • Smoking.
  • Excessive exposure to harmful sunlight.
  • Retinal detachment.
  • Exposure to chemicals or radiation.

Regular eye checkups every 3 months are recommended for high-risk individuals. Others should have a checkup every 6 months.

When Should You Visit an Eye Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should immediately see an ophthalmologist:

  • Sensitivity to bright light.
  • Seeing dark halos.
  • Blurred or cloudy vision.
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription.
  • Poor night vision.
  • Yellowish tint in vision.
  • Difficulty reading.

These symptoms strongly indicate cataracts. Early diagnosis allows for better treatment outcomes.

How Are Cataracts Treated?

Cataracts can only be treated through surgery. There are several surgical techniques:

Laser Cataract Surgery (Femto Laser)

This method uses femtosecond laser technology to create a precise corneal incision and divide the lens into small pieces for removal. A new artificial lens is then implanted.

Phacoemulsification (Phaco) Cataract Surgery

Similar to the laser technique, but the lens nucleus is broken into microscopic fragments and removed through a small probe. A new lens is then implanted.

Cataract Surgery

Traditional Cataract Surgery

The oldest method, now rarely used. The surgeon creates a manual incision, removes the cloudy lens, and replaces it with a new artificial lens.
Modern techniques like phaco and laser are now preferred due to safety and precision.

Can Cataracts Be Treated With Medication?

There is currently no medication capable of treating cataracts. Surgery is the only effective treatment option.

Inside Sharif eye centers, we ensure the highest level of cataract treatment using advanced technologies and strict sterilization protocols.
